At the age of 6, Luke Giammolva was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. His world as well as his family was changed in a moment and until there is a cure he will continue to live each day receiving insulin and staying on top of his blood glucose levels. Luke receives insulin shots with almost all of his meals, his family has been blessed to be able to afford a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), which allows his family to monitor his sugar levels 24/7. Unfortunately with any device it is not always 100% accurate. There have been times when the CGM has been off by 100 points, these numbers can be life threatening. If Luke’s blood sugar is low he requires fast acting carbohydrates to bring his sugar up quickly, if he is high, he needs insulin along with water to flush ketones out of his blood to prevent his blood from becoming acidotic and possibly moving towards Diabetic Ketoacidosis.
His family would like to be able to afford Luke every tool available to him to help him manage his diabetes. One amazing tool available to Luke is a Diabetic Alert Dog. Diabetic alert dogs have been shown to sense a drop or rise in their owners sugar long before the CGM does, for extra peace of mind and safety we would love to have a dog be apart of Luke's family and care team.
The cost of a sweet puppy is between $2500 to $3000, once the puppy is chosen, he or she starts their training of between 18 to 24 months. This training can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $15,000 and is an ongoing investment of training, and commitment.
The expenses for this event will be covered by Dat Dads' Club and 100% of the money collected will go to Luke and his family.
